Something — presumably, the diffusion of molecules among the infected cells — allows complete viral particles to replicate, self-assemble and infect anew.

Nothing self-assembles. Energy is required. Viruses steal the energy that is required for the creation of base pairs and cell type differentiation. The level of ignorance expressed in comments about self-assembly is intolerable to conservatives.

Additional support for an enzymatic mechanism underlying CHEC-9 activity was found by inspection of the peptide’s amino acid sequence: Cys-His-Glut-Ala-Ser-Ala-Ala-Gln-Cys. This familiar motif consisted of a “catalytic” histidine followed by a metal-binding acidic residue (glutamic or aspartic acid) and flanked by stabilizing cystines.

Similarly, the stability of all organized genomes in all vertebrates with jaws has been attributed the the substitution of achiral glycine in position 6 of the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) decapeptide.


The abbreviations appearing are to standard proteinogenic amino acids, except for pyroGlu, which refers to pyroglutamic acid, a derivative of glutamic acid. The NH2 at the carboxyl terminus indicates that rather than terminating as a free carboxylate, it terminates as a carboxamide. -Wikipedia

Many researchers fail to report that designation of chirality, because they assume that all amino acids are in their L- form. The instability of the L-forms is tractable. For example, bacteria and archaea, become L-forms: cells without walls in the last stage of what appears to be the virus-driven degradation of messenger RNA, which is typically prevented in jawed vertebrates via the substitution of one amino acid: GLYCINE.

Chemistry Nobel Laureate, Bernard Feringa helped to bring forward the issue of light-controlled chirality.

These findings indicate that the substitution of glycine for a chiral amino acid in GnRH during evolution allows a more constrained conformation for receptor binding and that this subtle single amino acid substitution in a site remote from the ligand functional domains has marked effects on its structure and activity.

These researchers assumed that the light-activated constraints on achiral glycine did not matter and claimed:

During at least 600 million years of evolution the N and C termini of GnRH have been conserved as functional domains for binding and activating cognate receptors to accomplish these functions.

The biologically uninformed science idiot, Laurence A. Moran, linked the accidental creation of achiral glycine to the evolution of all vertebrate biodiversity in all vertebrates with jaws.

The simplest amino acid is glycine where the R group is just a hydrogen atom. Thus, glycine is not a chiral compound and there’s no such thing as L-glycine or D-glycine. All other natural amino acids are chiral. Glycine might have formed spontaneously from acetate or glycerol. According to this scenario, the exclusive presence of L-amino acids instead of D-amino acids is just an accident.  (4/24/2009)

What he claims was an accident somehow started with the spontaneous formation of glycine or the biophysically constrained energy-dependent creation of all life on Earth.

The discovery of the fact that one decapeptide molecule, among the GnRHs, was constructed perfectly at the beginning of 400 million years evolution and that it is not possible to improve its physiological potency using the any natural amino acid is, in my opinion, important, fascinating and beautiful.
