“Transition from Inorganic to Organic Life was Based on Information, Not Chemistry”
Reese Jones quoted from the article linked above on his Facebook page: “…organization of biological replicators differs crucially from trivial replication associated with crystals (non-life).”
He added the following nonsensical non-sequitur “[and organization of internet information replicators differs further from biological replications, so we may be witnessing another phase transition into internet lifeforms”
Like others who are touting ridiculous theories about life on this planet, Jones seems unable to understand the fact that biological replication (i.e., reproduction) is nutrient-dependent and pheromone-controlled. One of the truisms brought to our attention again by Davies, whose thoughts are the basis for this discussion, is that “Epigenetics provides striking examples of how bottom-up genetic and top-down epigenetic causation intermingle.”
In my model, bottom-up genetics is a function of nutrient-uptake, since organisms are genetically predisposed to find food. Top-down epigenetic cause intermingles with genetics when nutrients metabolize to the pheromones that control biological replication (i.e., reproduction) in species from microbes to man. Thus, we are not “…witnessing another phase transition into internet lifeforms”
We have never witnessed anything of the kind. We never will. Darwin’s ‘conditions of life’ are nutrient-dependent and pheromone-controlled, which means that electronic life will never exist in any form. It will never exist in any electronic form because the complexity of systems biology and the feedback mechanisms required to stabilize the molecular mechanisms conserved across all species cannot be electronically replicated.
Meanwhile, Jones appears to be trying to get me blocked from posting to public discussions on the topic of my expertise. That’s also typical of what academics do when anyone challenges their ridiculous opinions by introducing biological facts into discussions they initiate.
